Meningitis B refers to infection caused by meningococcal group B bacteria. These bacteria can cause serious illnesses including meningitis and septicaemia, which can become severe very quickly.
Meningitis can spread through close contact such as coughing, sneezing and kissing. Symptoms can include a high temperature, headache, vomiting, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, cold hands and feet, confusion, drowsiness and a rash that does not fade. A rash does not always appear.
Meningitis can affect anyone, but it is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults. Teenagers and young adults are also more likely to carry and spread meningococcal bacteria.
