Pink Eye, or conjunctivitis, is an infection or inflammation affecting the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer that lines the inside of your eyelid and covers the white part of your eye. This condition is common and often resolves without treatment. However, lasting symptoms could indicate a more serious eye problem.

Redness in one or both eyes
Itchiness in one or both eyes
A gritty feeling in one or both eyes
A discharge that forms a crust during sleep
Excessive tearing
Viruses, including the common cold
Bacteria
Allergies (pollen, dust, animal dander, etc.)
A foreign body in the eye
A chemical splash in the eye
Exposure to someone infected with viral or bacterial conjunctivitis
Having allergies
Wearing contact lenses, especially extended-wear lenses
Severe eye pain
Sensitivity to light
Symptoms that get worse or don't improve
Vision problems, such as sensitivity to light or blurred vision

Medical history evaluation: Your doctor may ask about personal or family history of recurrent eye allergies or infections.
External examination of the eyes: The doctor will look for swollen, red, or tender areas around the eyes or eyelids.
Evaluation of the conjunctiva and external eye tissues: Using a lighted instrument, your doctor can determine if the conjunctiva is clear or if it appears inflamed and red.
Assessment of the drainage or discharge from the eyes: This can help the doctor determine if your pink eye is bacterial, viral, or allergic in origin.

Serious infections in adults, especially if caused by the herpes virus
One common misconception is that all pink eye is contagious. However, pink eye caused by allergens or irritants is not contagious.
